The Ego

Central panel of the Freudian triptych. A crowded still life on a gold ground: a black raven mid-flight, an iridescent peacock, a many-pointed sun, a fish, a serpent, and a scallop shell holding a single pearl. Too many emblems for one frame, held in uneasy balance — which is the ego's whole job.
